Nowadays, there is less need for the traditional darkroom with
an enlarger, chemicals, and photographic paper. Everything can
be done digitally. Images may be obtained with a CCD camera,
DSLR, or web cam, manipulated, and then combined into a color
image with the appropriate computer hardware and software. The
images can even be printed on a high quality color printer with
almost as much detail and color as the finest photographic
prints. If one invests in a film scanner, then old negatives and
slides can be scanned and converted into digital files for
computer manipulation.
PowerPoint presentations have replaced traditional slide shows.
CCD images converted into the Tiff, JPG, or GIF format are easy
to incorporate into a PowerPoint presentation, and JPG and GIF
images are used for most web pages, such as this one. CCD color
astrophotography requires a lot of work, time, and money. It is
not easy, and there is a long learning curve. However, it is fun
and produces spectacular results when all goes well. |
